Rights and Responsibilities of Students with Special Needs:
People with special needs on Herbert Fletcher University (HFU) have the right for:
- Equality of access to courses, programs, technologies, activities and services offered by the institution.
- Confidentiality of all the information about your special needs and the capability to choose to whom this information can be disclosed, unless the disclosure is required or permitted by law.
- Have the information available in accessible formats.
Students with special needs in HFU have the obligation to:
- Know the qualifications and support the rules of the institution regarding the courses, programs and services.
- Voluntarily identify yourself as a person with special needs when you need a reasonable accommodation and search for information, counseling and assistance when you need.
- Contact the Student Services Office who offers the reasonable accommodation to apply for reasonable adaptations, that may adjust to the online modality.
- Provide the signed documents, original and in digital format, by an authorised professional or specialist describing the nature of your special needs, in what way you are limited to participate on the programs, courses and activities, and what type of reasonable accommodation is prefered for your best performance in the academic and online way.
- The students are responsible for the costs associated with obtaining documentation.
The Institution has the right to:
- Apply for the most recent documentation to evaluate the needs of reasonable adjustments online.
- Deny the reasonable accommodation request if the received documentation it is not compatible with the need for accommodation, under the online modality.
- The institution will submit to the Executive Commission for Student Services the analysis of a reasonable accommodation that would impose a fundamental revision of a program or activity of the institution.
- Present to people with special needs the information in accessible formats that the online modality allows, by petition.
- Provide reasonable and effective ways in courses, programs, services and others, for students with special needs.
- Maintain confidentiality of records and communications, except if it’s required or permitted by law.
- Notify the Academic Administration Office about the students with approved reasonable accommodation, that it may provide a report to the professors who will be attending this students.
- If necessary, will be discuss any request related to the accommodation with the professional or specialist who made the recommendation.
- Unless the condition does not requires it, the documentation will not be required again. At the beginning of every semester,the renewal of the application for reasonable accommodation in required.
